Vol. 372 No. 11

Written Answers. - Departmental Employees.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons employed in his Department at 30 April 1987; the role of each employee; the number employed at the same date for the years 1980 to 1986 inclusive; and the total cost involved.

It would be impossible to provide the information sought by the Deputy without the expenditure of a disproportionate amount of official time. Information of the kind sought is published annually in the State Directory, though not in the detail requested nor related to the particular dates specified. There is also relevant information in the Book of Estimates published each year. I would refer the Deputy to these publications which are available in the Library of the House.

The figures for the years 1980 to 1983 inclusive are in respect of the then Department of Transport.

The figures for the years 1984 to 1986, inclusive, are in respect of the then Department of Communications which combined the previous Transport portfolio and the residual Department of Posts and Telegraphs following the assignment of responsibility for the operation of the postal and telecommunications services to An Post and Bord Telecom Éireann, respectively.

The figures for 1987 reflect the establishment of a new Department of Tourism and Transport involving.

—the addition of the Tourism function to the Transport portfolio;

—the transfer of certain marine functions to the new Department of the Marine; and

—the creation of a separate Department of Communications with responsibility for postal, telecommunications, radio and broadcasting matters.

The role of each employee is to carry out the tasks assigned to him/her as part of the Department's work of providing advice and support to the Minister in discharging his responsibilities as laid down in Statute or otherwise.

The cost for each year is shown in the annual Appropriation Account, or where this is not yet available, in the Estimates for that year.
