asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of persons employed in his Department at 30 April 1987; the role of each employee; the number employed at the same date for the years 1980 to 1986 inclusive; and the total cost.

The following table gives the numbers employed in the Department for the years 1980 to 1987 inclusive:

The fluctuations in the numbers employed are due in part to the changes in the functions of the Department during the years in question. Details of the annual costs of salaries and wages are contained in the Appropriation Accounts. Where Appropriation Accounts are not available, the information can be obtained from the Book of Estimates.

The role of each employee is to carry out the tasks assigned to him/her as part of the Department's work of providing advice and support to the Minister in discharging his responsibilities.
