Vol. 372 No. 13

Written Answers. - Coal Dependency.

36.

asked the Minister for Energy the present dependence on coal for primary energy needs; the projected dependence on coal in Ireland by the year 2000; and if he will make a statement on his policy regarding coal usage in the industrial, commercial and domestic sectors including his assessment of the environmental impact of coal usage.

Ireland's dependence on coal for primary energy needs in 1986 was just under 18 per cent according to provisional figures available. Our projected dependence on coal is 24 per cent by the year 2000. Since the two oil crises of the seventies it has been Government policy to have a wider mix of fuels and to encourage diversification from oil to alternative fuels including coal. This policy must continue to safeguard our energy security. Under our energy conservation programme, advice is given to industrial, commercial and domestic consumers on the efficient use of coal. Future developments in coal usage must of course have regard to environmental considerations, but responsibility for these does not come within the domain of my Department.
