Vol. 372 No. 13

Written Answers. - Nuclear Energy.

53.

asked the Minister for Energy if he will make a statement on the agencies who advise his Department in connection with levels of radiation or infection; and the changes, if any, which are proposed.

Under the Nuclear Energy Act, 1971 the Nuclear Energy Board were established for the purpose of advising the Government and the Minister for Energy on nuclear energy and matters connected therewith. As I stated in reply to a question on 8 April 1987 concerning the replacement of the NEB by the National Radiological Protection Institute, I consider that it is timely to make such a change. The functions of the new institute will be established within a legislative framework which will more appropriately reflect the present needs of the country in the field of radiation safety, radiation protection and monitoring. I am, at present, considering what legislative measures would be most appropriate.
