Vol. 373 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cost of Computer-Based Systems.

74.

asked the Minister for Health the applications, if any, which have been made to the Department of Finance relating to the expenditure on computerisation by his Department between 1982 and 1986, expenditure which officials at his Department told the former Dáil Committee on Public Expenditure amounted to £10 million or £11 million.

The figure of £10 million to £11 million given by officials of my Department to the former Committee on Public Expenditure related to the costs of introducing computer-based systems to the whole health sector including health boards and voluntary hospitals and other health agencies.

The total expenditure on computerisation within the Department of Health itself, and for which Department of the Public Service (now Finance) approval was required, was £400,000 approximately for the years in question.

The Deputy's question referred also to figures for computer expenditure in relation to the health services published in the comprehensive public expenditure programmes. No such figure is cited in any of the volumes published to date under that title.
