Vol. 373 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

11.

asked the Minister for Labour the present position regarding the operation of the Social Employment Scheme within the Dublin Corporation area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Agreement of the relevant local trade unions is required before an application can be considered under the social employment scheme. Since the introduction of the scheme, Dublin Corporation have made a number of attempts to initiate projects in their area. However, there is considerable objection to the scheme among the trade unions representing the corporation workforce. A series of attempts have been made to overcome these problems but the objections have remained. I should, however, express my concern at the position in Dublin and my Department are again actively pressing for progress with the unsatisfactory situation.
