Vol. 373 No. 3

Written Answers. - Industrial Relations.

15.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will give an assurance that there will be no cutbacks in the industrial relations machinery covered by his Department, such as the Labour Court, the Employment Appeals Tribunals, Rights Commissioner service, Employer-Labour Conference, industrial inspectorate, and the many other services provided; his views on whether any cutback would be counter-productive; his views on whether the provision of these services is essential to good industrial relations and that good industrial relations are essential to maintaining existing jobs and creating new jobs; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I agree with the Deputy that good industrial relations have an important contribution to make in maintaining existing jobs and in creating an environment where new jobs will be created. It is my view that the machinery and services mentioned by the Deputy have served the country well and continue to provide support and help to those who are working for good industrial relations. My Department's budget for 1987 will allow for the maintenance of the services mentioned.
