asked the Minister for Health in respect of Ireland and each other EC State the proportion of Gross National Product spent on health services for each of the last ten years.

The most recent year for which comparable public health expenditure data are readily available for most EC Countries is 1983. The following table sets out the data requested for the years 1977-'83.

In making comparisons of this nature between Ireland and other countries, the OECD* have suggested that the Irish figures be reduced by one seventh to compensate for the more limited definition of health services in other European Countries.
