Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - Student Nurse Vacancies.

12.

asked the Minister for Health the arrangements, if any, he is making in connection with the central admission procedure for student nurses; the number of applicants and the total fees paid; whether it is anticipated that any vacancies will be filled in the current year; if so, the number of vacancies; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Responsibility for the operation of the bureau rests with An Bord Altranais.

I understand from An Bord Altranais that a total of 6,300 completed applications were received by the Central Applications Bureau. The amount received in fees was £189,000.

I am at present having a review carried out to identify the service plans of the major health agencies. The outcome of this review will facilitate the making of decisions on a national basis to ensure the maintenance of essential services. I do not propose to make a decision on intake of student nurses for the remainder of this year pending the completion of that review.
