Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Galway Housing Schemes.

202.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he will permit Galway Corporation to proceed with the scheme for 20 houses for the elderly at Abbeygate Street, Galway city; and if and when he proposes to commence the scheme for 76 houses at Ballybane, County Galway.

A layout and cost plan for 20 apartments at Abbeygate Street were approved in July 1986, subject to the submission of further technical documentation. This has now been examined by the Department's inspectorate in consultation with the corporation's technical staff and the corporation will be notified of the outcome in the near future.

A layout and cost plan for 70 houses at Ballybane were approved in June 1986 to enable forward planning of the scheme to proceed, subject to some technical modifications, assessment of up to date trends in housing need and availability of capital.

Further progress with these schemes will be determined by the availability of capital for the programme and the extent and urgency of housing needs in Galway relative to those in other local authority areas.
