Vol. 373 No. 8

Written Answers. - Alleged Misuse of Irish Passports.

23.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the United States Government have given an explanation as to why some United States officials used forged Irish passports last year; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The actions taken by the Government in response to reports referring to the alleged misuse of Irish passports were set out in replies given by the then Minister on 27th November 1986 and by me on 24th March. I indicated then the grave concern of the Irish Government at these reports and that the US Secretary of State had accepted the view of the Irish Government that any misuse of Irish passports is totally unacceptable. There have been no new developments in this matter since my last reply. Deputies will, of course, be aware of the current Congressional investigations underway in the United States. We are monitoring these closely and shall take whatever further action is considered necessary.
