Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - Parent Representation on Management Boards.

164.

asked the Minister for Education her views on whether managements, staffs and parents of secondary and community/comprehensive schools should be represented on boards of management of regional technical colleges particularly having regard to the fact that in 1983/1984 the entrants to third level courses in regional technical colleges were predominantly from these schools; given that 84 per cent of entrants are from secondary and community/ comprehensive schools should parent representation exist at board of management level.

I am at present examining the position of the RTCs under the Vocational Education Act, 1930 with a view to giving a greater measure of operational autonomy to the colleges while retaining them within the VEC structure. The question of the composition of the boards of management of the RTCs is being considered in the context of that review. I am not in a position at present to anticipate the outcome of that review except to state that I would not concur with the general principle regarding the composition of boards of management outlined by the Deputy.
