Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - Smuggling of Animals.

46.

asked the Minister for Finance the steps, if any, he proposes to take to stamp out the smuggling of animals across the Border; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that all possible steps are being taken by Customs to combat the smuggling of animals across the land frontier. ]In the recent past, extra Customs patrol units operating out of Dublin have combined with local units and have achieved considerable success in making seizures of animals, mainly of cattle. There is also ongoing close liaison and contact between officials from Revenue, Department of Agriculture, British Customs and Department of Agriculture, Northern Ireland.
