Vol. 373 No. 9

Written Answers. - American Immigration Office.

52.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs whether the American immigration authorities have set up an office at Shannon Airport, County Clare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Delegations from Ireland and the US met in Dublin from 27 to 29 May 1987 to discuss the establishment of a permanent scheme of US immigration pre-inspection at Shannon under the terms of the Irish-US Pre-inspection Agreement concluded last year. The delegations agreed that the trial period of pre-inspection at Shannon between 1 July and 31 October, 1986 had been very successful. ]They also agreed that a permanent scheme of pre-inspection should be established at Shannon airport and that it was desirable that the scheme should commence, if possible, during the 1987 summer period. Among the issues discussed were the scale and form of a permanent facility at Shannon, the traffic that might use the facility and associated costs and benefits. It is hoped that a date for the recommencement of pre-inspection will be settled in the near future.
