Vol. 373 No. 10

Written Answers. - Disciplinary Machinery for Legal Profession.

25.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will appoint a legal ombudsman to investigate complaints against members of the legal profession; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy will be aware from statements which both my predecessors and I have made, that proposals to amend the Solicitors Acts, 1954-60 have been under examination in my Department, including proposals in relation to the disciplinary machinery for solicitors. The Deputy will be aware also that among the matters which the Restrictive Practices Commission are dealing with in their current study of restrictive practices in the legal profession is that representation on the professions' disciplinary bodies is confined to members of the legal profession. Any specific proposals I may have on this matter will be announced in the normal way in due course.
