asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of jobs created by the IDA in each sector over each of the last 10 years and in the current year; the average cost of each job through the authority; the comparison between the level of job approvals and the actual jobs created for the same period.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the number of jobs created in IDA supported projects in each year 1977 to 1986, by sector, is as set out in the following table. Figures for 1987 are not yet available.

The average cost per job sustained in the periods 1978-84 and 1979-85 is set out in the annual report of the IDA for the years 1984 and 1985 respectively which are available in the Oireachtas Library. Similarly the number of jobs approved by IDA in each year 1977-85 is contained in the annual reports for those years. The 1986 figure will be published in the annual report for that year.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the numbers of people employed by the IDA for each of the last 10 years, and for the current year; and if he will give a breakdown of these numbers in (a) overseas offices, (b) head office administration, (c) the small industries programme as regionalised and (d) the company development programme.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that the numbers of people employed by it for each of the last ten years and the current year, in the format requested, is set out in the following tabular statement. In the case of head office, the figures include staff in both front line and support areas. The IDA do not have a separate unit dealing with the company development programme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total level of expenditure for each of the last 10 years including the current year on the IDA through his Department; and if he will give a breakdown of this expenditure by way of (a) capital investment and property buildings, (b) salaries and wages of employees, (c) any expenditure on advertisements, public relations and promotions, and (d) grant aid to applicants.

The information requested by the Deputy for the years up to 1985 can be extracted from the IDA's annual reports which are available from the Oireachtas Library. Information in respect of 1986 and 1987 will be published in the IDA's annual reports for those years.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total number of IDA grant aided jobs that were subsequently lost for the last ten years; the total number of IDA grant aid committed over the same period to firms that subsequently ceased operations and the proportion of this subsequently recovered by the IDA.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that of the total number of 117,422 jobs which were created in IDA assisted industrial projects, both indigenous and overseas, over the period 1977-86 inclusive, 36,438 were subsequently lost. The total amount of grants paid to firms which ceased operations in the period is £177 million. Of this £31 million consists of training grants which are non-refundable.

In addition capital grant repayment liability normally reduces at the rate or 10 per cent per annum subject to a maximum of 50 per cent.

The total amount of grants refunded to IDA in the period exclusive of refunds for 1986, for which only provisional figures are available, is £25.75 million. The IDA is endeavouring to recover further outstanding amounts.
