Vol. 373 No. 12

Written Answers. - Sellafield Nuclear Processing Plant.

86.

asked the Minister for Energy if, in view of the decision of the Paris Convention in Cardiff, Wales, to reject the Government's calls for the complete closure of the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant, the plans, if any, he now has to further this demand; if the Government will initiate proceedings before the International Court of Justice against Britain as a result of the contamination of our environment from Sellafield; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As I indicated in the Dáil on 3 June 1987, while the Irish Recommendation to close Sellafield did not get sufficient support, the Government were heartened by the understanding and sympathy for our concerns, which many countries expressed at the meeting of the Paris Convention in Cardiff. I also stated in the Dáil that the Government intend to resubmit a similar recommendation at next year's meeting of the Convention in Portugal.

The closure of Sellafield will continue to be pursued unrelentingly with the UK authorities and at other international fora. I am reviewing all possible courses of action open to me to pursue our legitimate demand for the closure of Sellafield.
