Vol. 373 No. 13

Written Answers. - Cattle Marketing.

23.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food in view of the fact that Ireland is one of the only countries to have implemented the banning of the implants in cattle in advance of EC stipulated legislation, if he will ensure that the full benefit of Ireland's move will be reflected in our overseas marketing drive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland is not alone in having banned the use of hormones for growth promotion purposes. In fact most other member states have done likewise.

From 1 January, 1988 intra-Community trade in hormone-treated animals and their meat will be prohibited. Our ban on growth implants will, however, enable us to meet this deadline and ensure continued access to vital export markets.

The ban on the use of hormones enhances Ireland's established reputation for the quality and wholesomeness of its produce and is, therefore, a valuable element in the promotion of our meat exports by our exporters and by CBF.
