Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Co-ordination of Marketing Efforts.

34.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the progress, if any, in plans for improved co-ordination of Irish marketing efforts overseas; in particular, whether it remains his intention to place all development agencies operating abroad in one location; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 34 together.

The Government are anxious to further increase the return from State expenditure on all overseas promotional and representational activities. The primary objective is to increase and diversify our trade and other economic links with key international markets by means of effective co-ordination and clear focus on selling Ireland abroad.

In an effort to strengthen the trade role of missions abroad, I am examining the question of the appointment of trade attachés. I will be taking into account existing numbers and level of representatives abroad, including departmental officers in London and Geneva, their general effectiveness and the costs and benefits of new arrangements.

I am also looking at the idea of housing Irish representatives in key markets in one central location in each market. The purpose of this would be:

—to co-ordinate marketing efforts,

—to ensure efficient use of resources,

—to eliminate duplication and overlap,

and generally to enhance the profile and perception of Ireland.
