asked the Taoiseach if any private consultants have been engaged by his Department within the past year; if so the names of these consultants; the terms of their engagement; the fees paid to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The attached schedule sets out the names of all private consultants engaged by my Department within the last year; the terms of their engagement; and the fees paid to date. It is normal practice for Departments to engage consultants to undertake research or advise on specific matters where it would not be feasible to provide these services from within the Civil Service.

Department of the Taoiseach:

1. Arthur Gibney and Partners, Architects. Date engaged: 8.4.1987; terms: to prepare a feasibility study on the adaptation of Stack A in the Custom House Docks site; Fee: £11,745.51.

2. Mr. H.J. Dowd, Archival Consultant. Date engaged: 1.2.1987; terms: to examine and prepare files in the Department prior to their transfer to the National Archives; Fee: £6,386 to date (£62 per diem).

3. Ms Mavis Arnold, Author. Date engage: 30.12.1986; terms: to prepare text of Irishwomen into Focus: the development of women's rights in Ireland; fee: £1,700.00.

4. Ms. Noeleen Dowling, Scriptwriter. Date engaged: 8.12.1986; terms: scriptwork on report of Women's Health Week, 1986; Fee: £640.00.

Government Information Services:

5. Mr. Noel Jones, Written Communications Consultant. Date engaged: 5.5.1987; terms: to write and research the provision of literature for the Single European Act Referendum; fee: £1,593.75.

National Museum of Ireland:

6. Dr. John Kitchen, Head of Furniture Restoration, Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Date engaged: 1.6.1987; terms: to examine the present condition of the National Museum Furniture Collection and make recommendations for its conservation; fee: unpaid as yet (Est. Stg. £200 per day — 2/3 days).

7. Mr. Andrew Oddy, Keeper, Department of Conservation, British Museum. Date engaged: 11.6.1987; terms: (i) To inspect the Lough Kinale Bookshrine, (ii) to report on the Conservation Requirements of the National Museum; fee: £1,492.06.

8. Dr. Brian Cranstone, former Curator Pitt Rivers Museum. Date engaged: 19.5.1987; terms: to assess and make proposals for the display of the Ethnographical Collection of the National Museum; fee: £444.20.

Public Record Office:

9. Ms Aoife Leonard, Consultant Archivist. Date engaged: 31.12.1986; terms: Archival work in connection with the computerisation and microfilming of convict records for the Australian BiCentenary; fee: £7,828 to date.
