Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Birmingham Six Hearing.

57.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the person or body who will represent the Irish Government at the appeal hearing of the case of the Birmingham Six; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

58.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government will be officially represented at the appeal hearing of the Birmingham Six which is due to open in London in November, 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

59.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will have the Irish people officially represented by a Minister or a Minister of State at the appeal hearings of the Birmingham Six early next month; the action, if any, he is taking to ensure that all evidence, including new evidence, will be heard by the Appeal Court; and if he will outline the Government's views on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 57, 58 and 59 together. I wish to assure Deputies that the Government will be represented at the appeal hearing of the case of the Birmingham Six. A specific announcement will be made before the hearing begins on 2 November next.

In the light of the opening of the appeal hearing on 2 November, it would not be appropriate for me to make a specific statement on the case at this stage.
