Vol. 374 No. 1

Written Answers. - Shannon Navigation Level.

85.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will make an order reducing the navigation level of the Shannon so as to reduce flooding between Meelick and Athlone, County West-meath; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is no statutory provision for the making of an order reducing the navigation level of the Shannon.

Reduction of navigation level would not, in any event, reduce the flooding which occurs between Meelick and Athlone during periods of high flow in the Shannon. The fundamental cause of the problem is that the capacity of the channel is not adequate to take the volume of water involved.
