asked the Minister for Energy the present position on the subject of electricity pricing by the ESB; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have maintained pressure on the ESB, following the January 1987 price reduction, for a further cut in electricity prices. The ESB maintain that, on the basis of present costs, there is little scope for a reduction at this time. I am glad to note that the ESB do not envisage any price increase over the next few years. I do not, however, intend to let the matter rest at that and I will ensure that the possibility for further price reductions will be kept under continuing review and that any opportunities for a reduction that may arise will be availed of.
