Vol. 374 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reserve Defence Force Reductions.

33.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will reduce the size of the reserve Defence Force in 1988 in order to achieve a 2 per cent reduction in real terms, in pay costs of the force; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Limerick West): The overall strengths of An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil, which is by far the largest component of the Reserve Defence Force, and of An Slua Muirí have been reduced considerably in recent years. Further reductions are not contemplated.

Can the Minister tell the House how he will achieve the 2 per cent reduction in the pay costs? Will it be achieved by a reduction in the Permanent Defence Force alone?

(Limerick West): The reduction of 2 per cent in the pay costs of the Reserve Defence Force would have resulted in fewer numbers being called for annual training. The reduction of 2 per cent will be spread evenly across the board so that there will not be hardship in any component of the Reserve Defence Force.

The Minister assures the House there will be no reduction in the Reserve Defence Force and that the reduction of 2 per cent in pay costs will be achieved by reducing numbers called for training. Is that correct?

(Limerick West): As I have said, the 2 per cent reduction will be applied across the board.

Is the Minister saying it will not be achieved by reducing the numbers?

(Limerick West): That is right. There will be no further reduction in numbers.
