Vol. 374 No. 8

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grant.

101.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Education if a person (details supplied) in County Limerick is eligible for a higher education grant; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The person in question is not eligible for a higher education grant. The position is that county councils and county borough corporations, who administer the higher education grants scheme, are empowered to award grants only to persons who, among other things, achieve prescribed successes in the Leaving Certificate examination of the Department of Education. As it is understood that the student in question did not present herself for the Leaving Certificate examination, there is no statutory authority for the award of a grant to her in respect of her studies.
