Vol. 374 No. 9

Written Answers. - Namibian Independence.

70.

asked the Taoiseach if he will make a statement regarding his meeting with Dr. Nujoma, President of the South West African People's Organisation, SWAPO; and the specific measures, diplomatic, economic and humanitarian, his Government will take to support the efforts of SWAPO to secure the independence of Namibia.

Dr. Nujoma paid a courtesy call on me yesterday, during which we exchanged views on the Namibian issue. The Government are fully committed to assisting the efforts of the United Nations to bring about the independence of Namibia and take the view that the Settlement Plan as endorsed by the UN Security Council Resolution 435 of 1978 provides the basis on which that independence can be achieved. We have also stated our support for selective and effective sanctions properly imposed by the UN Security Council to supplement the process of negotiation should South Africa continue its refusal to proceed in accordance with Resolution 435. We will continue to pursue our objectives in the UN and among the Twelve. We acknowledge the role of SWAPO in seeking to bring about independence in accordance with the UN Plan. Within the constraints imposed by Ireland's financial circumstances, we continue to provide assistance to Namibians through our contribution to the UN Trust Fund for Namibia.
