asked the Minister for Finance the total number of persons employed in the Revenue Commissioners and a breakdown into categories of (a) those employed in the collection system (b) those employed in local tax offices and (c) administration; the cost of operating the tax system in this country for the last three years and for 1988; and if he has satisfied himself regarding the levels of efficiency in the Revenue Commissioners.

The total serving staff of the Office of the Revenue Commissioners on 30 October 1987 (including Customs and Excise) is 6,565.
(a) (i) Number employed in the Office of the Collector-General, 648; (ii) Number of Indoor grades employed in Offices of Collectors of Customs and Excise, 605.
(b) Number employed in provincial districts in Inspector of Taxes offices, 1,183.
(c) Number employed in administration within the Revenue Commissioners, 1,264.
The cost of running the Office of the Revenue Commissioners:
1985, £80,948,000; 1986, £83,980,000; 1987, £95,138,000 (estimated); 1988, £95,700,000 (estimated).
The Government are satisfied that the resources of the Revenue Commissioners are managed as cost effectively and economically as possible consistent with carrying out their statutory duties.
