Vol. 374 No. 10

Written Answers. - International Peace Conference.

11.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will seek discussions with representatives of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation regarding UN proposals for an international peace conference on the Middle East problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Ireland, together with its partners in the Twelve, has made clear its support for the convening of an international conference to be held under the auspices of the United Nations with the participation of the parties concerned and of any party able to make a direct and positive contribution to the restoration and maintenance of peace and to the region's economic and social development. We believe that the Palestinian people and the PLO must be associated with any negotiations for a comprehensive settlement and Ireland recognises the role of the PLO in representing the Palestinian people.
