asked the Minister for Finance the number of prosecutions taken under exchange control legislation since its inception; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The volume of work involved in researching all records since the inception of the exchange control legislation in 1954 would not be justified. Records since 1979 have been examined and since that date two prosecutions have been taken.

The Deputy will appreciate that where breaches of the legislation are identified, prosecution is viewed as the ultimate solution. A number of alternative sanctions, such as the imposition of a compromise penalty in lieu of legal proceedings, can be and are applied in many cases.
