Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Loughlinstown (County Dublin) Hospital.

180.

asked the Minister for Health regarding the maternity unit at Loughlinstown general hospital, County Dublin, whether it is intended to close this unit; if so, the purpose to which funds saved by this measure will be put, in the event of the closure of this unit, the provisions, if any, which are to be made in respect of patients and staff members who work within this unit; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As part of the rationalisation of services in the South East Dublin-East Wicklow area it is intended, to transfer the maternity services from St. Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown, to the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street. Discussions are at an advanced stage between the Eastern Health Board, the National Maternity Hospital and my Department to facilitate this transfer. Out-patient services will continue at Loughlinstown Hospital.

Alternative services will be provided in the accommodation vacated by the maternity unit. Almost all the staff associated with the maternity unit will be redeployed to other areas in the hospital.

This transfer will not result in any diminution in the level or quality of service available to people in this area.
