Vol. 375 No. 1

Written Answers. - Retired Garda Members Employment.

89.

asked the Minister for Justice his views on whether there is a need to introduce the requirement of a minimum time span for retiring members of the Garda Síochána, above a certain rank and in receipt of a Garda pension, in which a retired member can commence employment with a private company involved in the security area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not, as yet, come to the view that there is any need to introduce a requirement on the lines suggested in the question but the matter is being kept under review.

There is no objection in principle to retired gardaí taking up employment with private companies involved in the security area. It may, however, be relevant to mention that Article 13 of the Garda Síochána Pensions Order, 1925, provides for the forfeiture of a Garda pension in certain circumstances, which include the taking up of any business or occupation in which the pensioner has made use of the fact of former employment in the Garda Síochána in a discreditable or improper manner.
