Vol. 375 No. 2

Written Answers. - DART System Extension.

20.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will make a statement regarding the proposal to provide a rapid rail DART system to serve the densely populated areas of Tallaght, Clondalkin and Ballyfermot in Dublin City.

As announced on 13 October, 1987, the Government decided that no further consideration will be given to extending the DART system because of the high costs of such development and the present serious state of the public finances. I have accordingly instructed the Chairman of CIE to prepare transport investment plans for the Dublin area, involving only bus based options or diesel services on existing rail lines. The objective of this is to seek to provide for the public transport needs of the people of the areas concerned in a cost effective way, taking account of the financial resources which are likely to be available.
