Vol. 375 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

48.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare when a rebate of disability benefit will be paid to a person (details supplied) in County Kildare.

The person concerned has been in receipt of an invalidity pension from October 1981 and the rebate is in respect of an increase in benefit for a child.

Arising from inquiries made in connection with the introduction of the equal treatment provisions in social security in November 1986, the Department became aware that an increase was due for the child in question. At the time of claiming the pension the person concerned had completed the application form prior to the child's birth and did not subsequently request an increase in pension for the child.

Due to an oversight, arrears of pension for the child were only awarded from 29 May 1986, that is, for a period of six months prior to November 1986 when the question of the increase arose. Arrangements have now been made to pay all arrears due for the period from October 1981 to May 1986 and a payable order will be issued shortly to the person concerned.
