Vol. 375 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

50.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if a person (details supplied) in County Waterford who has been in receipt of disability benefit for almost four years has been approved for invalidity pension.

Invalidity pension is payable to insured persons who satisfy the contribution conditions and who are permanently incapable of work.

The person concerned was examined on 4 November 1987 by a medical referee who did not consider him to be permanently incapable of work and asked to have him referred for a further examination in six months.

A deciding officer has decided that he is not, therefore, entitled to invalidity pension.

51.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if an application for unemployment benefit has been approved in the case of a person (details supplied) in County Waterford.

One of the conditions for payment of disability is that the claimant must have at least 39 contributions paid at the appropriate rate since entry into insurable employment.

The person concerned claimed disability benefit from 2 September 1987 and according to the records of the Department has only a total of 28 contributions paid. He is not, therefore, entitled to payment of disability benefit. If his means are insufficient to meet his needs he should apply to his community welfare officer with a view to claiming supplementary welfare allowance.
