Vol. 375 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

107.

asked the Minister for Education if arrangements will be made for school transport for persons (details supplies) in County Offaly to Ballingar primary school.

The children in question do not qualify for free school transport because they live less than two miles from Ballingar national school. Under the terms of the school transport scheme, they may be allowed concessionary fare paying facilities to that school provided that there is spare accommodation available on the service and that no extra State cost is incurred in facilitating them. Fare-paying tickets are issued by the local CIE office on a "first come, first served" basis each term. All spare seats had been allocated when this family's application was received for the current school term.

108.

asked the Minister for Education if she will reverse a decision made by the school transport section refusing to transport the child of a person (details supplied) in County Meath to the post-primary school in Oldcastle, County Meath; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The pupil referred to by the Deputy lives within three miles of Oldcastle post-primary school and is, therefore, ineligible for school transport, under the terms of the post-primary school transport scheme. Concessionary fare-paying transport is the most which may be offered in this case. However, no application for a term ticket has been received in the local CIE office from the pupil in question. The medical card concession does not apply in the case of ineligible pupils.
