Vol. 375 No. 5

Written Answers. - Child Abuse Cases.

60.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will make arrangements for the introduction of screens in the courtrooms in child abuse cases, in order that alleged child victims can give evidence out of sight of the alleged assailant.

As I indicated in reply to a Parliamentary Question on 13 May 1987 (Official Report: Vol. 372, Cols. 1792 and 1793), the Law Reform Commission have undertaken an examination of the law on sexual offences, including the law on child sexual abuse. In so far as any recommendations the commission may make, for a change in the law on child sexual abuse come within the ambit of my Department, they will be considered by me following the publication of the commission's report. In that connection I will take into consideration the question of the arrangements for evidence being given by children.
