Vol. 375 No. 5

Written Answers. - UK Computer Specialities.

95.

asked the Minister for Labour if his attention has been drawn to a report that Britain will experience a skills shortfall of 53,000 by certain computer specialities in the National Computing Centre; and the implication of the report for training and employment prospect for young Irish people.

I am aware of reports indicating shortages in various skill areas, including computer staff, in Britain. The principal implication of shortages in Britain would be the enhancement of the career prospects of our young people with the necessary skills. Some Irish specialists could be expected to emigrate, leaving openings here for newly qualified or trained young people. In addition it would seem likely that salary prospects would improve for computing staff generally.

I am anxious to ensure that the significant State investment in training is used for the benefit of both the individual and the country.

AnCO are monitoring the situation and are currently studying manpower and skill areas for Irish people in the area, with particular reference to the financial services sector to be set up in the near future. The training offered by the new manpower agency, FÁS, will therefore be geared to the country's needs.
