Vol. 375 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Affiliation to International Organisations.

2.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will give a list of the international organisations to which his Department are affiliated, at a proposed cost next year of £230,000; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The allocation of £230,000 under Subhead F of the Vote for Communications represents my Department's estimated contribution in 1988 to the International Telecommunications Union. Provision is also made in the Appropriations-in-Aid for recoupment of 50 per cent of the cost from Telecom Éireann.

The International Telecommunications Union, formerly the International Telegraph Union, is the United Nations specialised agency for telecommunications. Since 1923, as a member, Ireland has had a vote at the various conferences and meetings of the union and, in that way, has contributed to the orderly development of world telecommunications.
