Vol. 375 No. 7

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

128.

asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a remedial teacher to Tallow and Ballyduff national schools in County Waterford in view of the fact that both schools are to lose a teacher in January 1988 and Tallow national school may lose a second teacher in September 1988.

I refer the Deputy to a similar question which I replied to in the Dáil on 3 November 1987.

There is no direct correlation between the fact that a specific school will lose a teacher and the need of particular children in that school for remedial education.

Available remedial teaching posts have always been allocated in accordance with priority of need and not in accordance with pupil-teacher ratios. This criteria will apply in relation to the cases referred to by the Deputy.

Tallow national school and Ballyduff No. 2 national school have made application for a shared remedial post. This application will be considered in due course.
