Vol. 375 No. 7

Written Answers. - Arterial Drainage Schemes.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance the total acreage involved in the completed Boyne arterial drainage scheme, the length of the Boyne River drained; the length of the major tributaries drained; the length of minor tributaries and other streams drained in the catchment area; and the total cost of the Boyne arterial drainage scheme in actual terms and in current money terms.

The information sought is set out below:

Length of River Drained

Boyne River

64 miles

Major tributaries

225 miles

Minor tributaries

1,035 miles

Cost of Scheme

Actual

£46m approx.

Expressed in Current Terms

£100m approx.

asked the Minister for Finance the total acreage involved in the proposed arterial drainage scheme for the Mulcaire River, County Limerick; the total length of the Mulcaire River; the length of the major tributaries that would be drained in any arterial drainage scheme; and the length of the minor tributories and other streams involved in an arterial drainage of the catchment area.

Pending the completion of a design, cost/benefit analysis and environmental impact study of a scheme for the Mulcaire River catchment, it is not possible to say with any certainty the area of land likely to benefit from, or the length of channel to be included in, the scheme. However, at this stage it is estimated that approximately 11,000 acres of damaged land could benefit from works on some or all of the 140 miles of major and minor channels originally surveyed.

asked the Minister for Finance the total acreage of the Owenmore and Arrow catchment area, in County Sligo; the total length of the Owenmore River and of the Arrow River; the total length of the major tributaries that would be involved in any arterial drainage scheme; and the total length of the minor tributaries and other streams in the catchment area that would be involved in any arterial drainage scheme for the Owenmore and Arrow.

Pending the completion of a design, cost-benefit analysis and environmental impact study of a scheme for the Owenmore and Arrow catchment area, it is not possible to say with any certainty the area of land likely to benefit from, or the length of channel to be included in, the scheme. However, at this stage it is estimated that approximately 15,000 acres of damaged land could benefit from works on some or all of the 460 miles of major and minor channels originally surveyed.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is the intention of his Department to carry out maintenance on the River Lee in Tralee, County Kerry in the near future.

Works on this river could be undertaken by the Office of Public Works only in the context of a comprehensive scheme for the catchment as a whole under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. There are no proposals to undertake such a scheme in the near future.
