asked the Minister for Labour if a trade union (details supplied) has the sole right to represent seamen employed on Irish registered ships.

While the trade union referred to in the Deputy's question represents the majority of ratings on Irish registered ships, two other unions (The Federated Workers' Union of Ireland and the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union) also represent ratings on Irish registered ships. In so far as the B & I and Irish Ferries are concerned the union referred to has exclusive negotiating rights on behalf of ratings.
