Vol. 376 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sport Involvement Week.

8.

asked the Minister for Education if she will run Sport Involment Week at an alternative time of the year to ensure greater participation; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the "Be Active — Be Alive" week which was held from 13 to 19 September 1987 and which generaged a large amount of sporting and recreational activities. For 1988 it is intended to organise a similar type of promotion. Consideration is being given at present to the most suitable time for such a promotion. I would be happy to consider any recommendations which the Deputy may wish to make regarding the timing of the event.

No doubt the Minister is aware of the extraordinary organisational powers of the schools and the teachers. I suggest that this week should be held when all the schools are open so that the teachers can mobilise the children and be totally involved in it. Perhaps that would be looked at in the future.

The "Be Active — Be Alive" week was instituted to involve all the community in sport and physical culture. It has a much greater relevance to adults than to children. I take the point the Deputy makes. We are considering having the campaign during the spring of 1988 rather than later in the year.

Will it be an election campaign?

I hope not, for your sake.
