Vol. 376 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Question. Oral Answers. - Violation of Angolan Sovereignty.

11.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government intend to raise at the United Nations or any other suitable international forum the continued violation of Angolan sovereignty by South African armed forces; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At the last European Political Co-operation Ministerial Meeting, on 23 November, I raised the question of South African presence in the region, in particular, continuing South African occupation of Namibia and consequent aggression by South Africa against Angola. The Foreign Ministers of the Twelve issued a statement strongly condemning South Africa's action and calling for the immediate withdrawal of all South African forces from Angola.

On 25 November South Africa's actions were condemned unanimously by the UN Security Council after a debate held at the urgent request of Angola.

The Government share wholeheartedly the sentiments expressed in both the Twelve's statement and the Security Council resolution. I am arranging for copies of both documents to be placed in the Dáil Library.

What further actions are intended at the initiative of our own Government and will the Minister confirm the position taken by the Irish Government in response to the resolutions that have been passed recently in the United Nations?

We have adopted the resolutions. South Africa's actions were condemned unanimously by the UN Security Council after a debate held at the urgent request of Angola. We support that and we also support the statement of the Twelve issued after the meeting on European Political Co-Operation on 23 November. I can arrange for copies of both these documents to be placed in the Library and they bear out what I am saying.
