Vol. 376 No. 5

Written Answers. - International Fund for Ireland.

35.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the total contributions to the International Fund for Ireland; the countries which contributed; the amounts involved; and when it will be distributed.

The three countries which have contributed to the international fund for Ireland are the United States, Canada and New Zealand. The United States has authorised grants to the fund of $120 million over 3 years of which $50 million was paid on 24 March 1987 and $35 million on 1 July 1987. Canada's contribution will be Can $10 million spread over 10 years of which $1.5 million was paid on 23 April 1987. New Zealand contributed NZ$300,000 in a single payment on 14 August 1987.

I would like to make clear that the distribution of the fund's resources is not under my control as it is the responsibility of the Board of the Fund which, under the agreement establishing the fund, acts independently. Questions on the distribution of funds are, thus, a matter for the board of the fund. I can say, however, that the first annual report of the board of the fund, which will provide a detailed list of its commitments, will be presented to the Government and published this week. I shall have a copy of the annual report placed in the Dáil Library as soon as it comes to hand.
