asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate the effect that the reduction in the provision for radio and other equipment in 1988 will have on the Garda Síochána; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision in the 1988 Garda Síochána Estimate for the purchase of radio equipment is adequate to cover the cost of the equipment scheduled to be delivered and installed in that year. The provision for radio is not, and does not require to be, static for each year. The provision for 1987, for example, includes a major part of the cost of the radio system for the Dublin Metropolitan Area which will not arise again in the coming year.
The 1988 provision for "other equipment" is in line with expenditure on this equipment in recent years.
