Vol. 376 No. 7

Written Answers. - Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of awards for injuries suffered by private persons which have been made by the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal since 1986; and the number of payments to the unfortunate victims which are still outstanding.

42.

asked the Minister for Justice the funds which will be made available to enable awards made to claimants before the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal to be paid; the number of awards which are now awaiting payment; and the total sum of money involved.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 35 and 42 together.

In the period from 1 January 1987 to 1 December 1987 the Criminal Injuries Compensation Tribunal made 601 awards the great majority of which are in respect of private persons. Payment is outstanding in 313 of these cases. Payment is also outstanding in 39 cases in which awards were made prior to 1 January 1987, giving a total of 352 cases in which payment is outstanding. The cost of these cases is estimated at £2.4 million.

A provision of £1.975 million has been made in the 1988 Estimates for the payment of awards made by the tribunal. Provisions for years subsequent to 1988 will be determined in the context of the Estimates for those years.
