Vol. 377 No. 4

Written Answers. - Waterford Corporation Boundary Extension.

75.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received an application from Waterford Corporation for a boundary extension into County Kilkenny; and if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

An application to extend the Waterford City boundary into County Kilkenny was received from Waterford Corporation in May 1979 but little progress has been made. A similar application, received at the same time, to extend the city boundary into Waterford County was finalised and the boundary has been duly extended by about 7,500 acres. My understanding is that the application to extend into Kilkenny is strongly opposed by Kilkenny County Council and the approach of successive Ministers has been that some measure of agreement between the local authorities affected is necessary if the extension is to go ahead. As there would clearly be major financial and other implications for both authorities it would be desirable that further efforts be made to negotiate an agreed approach.
