asked the Minister for Health the way in which the £2.6 million allocation to the handicapped from the national lottery is to be spent; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers - National Lottery Moneys Allocation.
A total of £2.262 million has been allocated for services for the physically and mentally handicapped. This money is being allocated for the implementation of resocialisation programmes designed to assist in the transfer of patients from institutional to community based services. The objective is to ensure that such persons will, through a programme of resocialisation, be in a position to meet the challenge of living independently within their own community. The programme will necessitate the purchase of houses, provision of day nursing facilities, day care centres and the employment of houseparents to encourage independent attitudes and behaviour. Of the £2.262 million I have to date allocated £494,000. A breakdown of how this money was allocated, is given in the tabular statement which is circulated in the Official Report.
