Vol. 377 No. 7

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Air Corps Helicopter Equipment.

30.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that the equipment and gear on the new Air Corps helicopters are sufficient to cope with surface to air missiles that may be in the possession of subversives; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

(Limerick West): It is not the practice to furnish information involving matters of a security nature.

I find it hard to understand that because new helicopters which were very badly needed were made available at a great cost to the Exchequer. I have information which leads me to believe that the gear and equipment on those new helicopters is not sufficient to deal with some of the guns that are at the disposal of subversives. If that is the case it appears that there was very poor planning involved in the purchase of the helicopters concerned.

(Limerick West): All I am permitted to say is that what the Deputy is saying is not correct.

I have to assume then that the helicopters are so equipped to deal with all contingencies. If that is the case I would be happy but the information at my disposal is that the equipment and gear that is necessary is not on the aircraft concerned.

(Limerick West): The Deputy can feel very happy that the Defence Forces are in safe hands.
