Vol. 377 No. 8

Written Answers. - Programme Funding.

101.

asked the Minister for Labour whether he will allocate further funding for FÁS in an effort to bring about a reconsideration of the proposal to terminate sponsorship/training of apprentices at the Racing Apprentice Centre of Education, County Kildare; if his attention has been drawn to the centre's 100 per cent employment/placement record since 1977; if he will suggest the means by which the £28,000 shortfall can be made up; if his attention has been drawn to the importance of the service provided by the centre; if the external training section of FÁS could help in this case; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no further funds at my disposal to allocate to FÁS. Detailed application of the Exchequer allocation for approved major training programmes, including the apprenticeship and specific skills programmes, is a matter for the day to day administration by FAS. In addition, it is Government policy that industry should carry an increasing share of the cost of training.
